Speech Abstract:

Evolution of Global HIT, Current Status and Future Direction of HIT in China, and Where Does China Stand on the Global HIT Continuum

China is making a huge investment in reforming and modernizing its healthcare system.  Information technology is one of eight pillars to support China healthcare reform.  Much funding is being provided by the Chinese government to make rapid progress on many fronts including improved use of information technology.

Near-term goals include electronic health records (EHRs), electronic medical records for hospital data (EMRs), regional health networks to share data (RHNs), and clinical pathways and DRGs to shorten length of stay and control costs.  Pilot programs are being conducted throughout the country, and many IT systems are being purchased by hospitals throughout China.

This talk will summarize the evolution of global HIT, the current status of HIT in China and its future direction and will draw from the experience of early adopters of IT healthcare around the world to see where China stands and how it can use its resources to leapfrog the rest of the world in HIT use in China.
